What If Your Brain Is Responding to Your Body?

For most of the last century, we’ve talked about mental health as though it lives entirely inside the head. Anxiety, low mood, brain fog, poor concentration, emotional ups and downs — all of it treated as a “brain problem,” to be understood and managed at the level of the brain itself.

That view has helped a great many people, and nothing here is meant to take away from it. But it may also be incomplete. Because there’s a simple fact we often overlook: the brain is an organ. And like every other organ in the body, it depends entirely on the environment it lives in.

Your heart can’t work properly if it’s starved of oxygen. Your kidneys struggle if you’re dehydrated. So why do we so often assume the brain is the one organ that operates in a sealed room, untouched by everything happening around it?

What if, at least some of the time, the brain isn’t malfunctioning at all? What if it’s simply responding — faithfully and predictably — to the state of the body it’s part of?

Starting with a different question

This is where the Restoration Model begins. Before asking what is wrong with the brain, it starts with a simpler question: is the body providing the brain with the resources it needs to function well?

Because the brain doesn’t work in a vacuum. It depends on healthy body systems, adequate nutrition, stable energy, good sleep, healthy digestion, regular movement, balanced hormones and a healthy internal environment. When those foundations are strong, the brain has what it needs to do its job well. When several of them are shaky, the brain is being asked to work in difficult conditions — and how we think and feel can shift as a result.

This isn’t a replacement for understanding the brain. It’s a wider lens placed around it — and it changes the kind of questions we think to ask.

The brain runs on what the body provides

Think of the brain as the most demanding organ you own. It makes up around 2% of your body weight but uses roughly a fifth of your energy. It never switches off. And to do its job, it needs a steady supply of raw materials.

Some of the most important are:

Omega-3 fats — especially DHA and EPA. DHA is a major building block of brain cell membranes; it helps the tiny structures that let brain cells communicate stay flexible and responsive. EPA plays more of a signalling and calming role, and has been studied particularly in relation to mood. We can’t make enough of these fats ourselves, so we rely on the diet — largely oily fish — to supply them.

Amino acids. These are the parts that make up protein, and they’re also the raw ingredients for your brain’s chemical messengers. Serotonin, dopamine and others are literally built from amino acids you eat. No raw materials, no messengers.

Vitamins and minerals. These rarely get the credit, but they’re the workers on the assembly line. B vitamins, zinc, magnesium, iron and others act as “cofactors” — helpers that switch the brain’s chemical reactions on. Without them, the machinery still exists, but it runs slowly or unreliably.

Put simply: if the body doesn’t deliver the ingredients, the brain can’t cook the meal. And when the meal is off, so is how you think and feel.

Nutrient imbalances and the mind: the work of Dr William J. Walsh

One researcher who spent his career on this idea was the American scientist Dr William J. Walsh, author of Nutrient Power. Over many years he analysed the biochemistry of thousands of people with mood and mental health difficulties, and became convinced of a striking point: we are not all the same on the inside.

Walsh argued that people can have very different biochemical patterns — imbalances in things like zinc and copper, differences in how efficiently the body handles certain nutrients, or specific tendencies that leave someone low in particular vitamins and minerals. Two people with the same label, he suggested, might have quite different underlying chemistry. His approach was to identify a person’s individual pattern and then use targeted nutrients to help bring it back into balance.

It’s an appealing and thought-provoking idea, and it fits neatly with the theme of this article: that the brain reflects the body’s chemistry. It’s fair to say, though, that Walsh’s framework sits at the edge of mainstream practice rather than at its centre. Much of it grew from his analysis of large patient databases rather than the kind of large, repeated clinical trials that psychiatry usually relies on, and it remains an area where the evidence is still developing. What’s valuable is the underlying principle — that biochemistry is individual, and that nutrients may play a real part in how we feel — even where the specifics are still being debated.

The blood sugar rollercoaster

Here’s an example almost everyone can relate to, and it needs no laboratory to notice.

Your brain prefers a steady, even supply of fuel in the form of blood sugar. When that supply is stable, thinking feels clear and mood feels level. But when we eat in a way that sends blood sugar sharply up and then crashing back down, the body scrambles to correct it — partly by releasing stress hormones like adrenaline.

The result is a familiar list: irritability, sudden fatigue, brain fog, difficulty concentrating, and cravings that pull you straight back toward the next quick hit of sugar. It can feel emotional and personal — like something is wrong with you — when in reality your brain is simply reacting to an unstable fuel supply.

I’ll be honest about my own experience here. Some time ago I cut most of the sugar out of my own diet. I wasn’t expecting much beyond the obvious. But what I noticed surprised me: I worried less, and my mind felt calmer and quieter than it had in a long time.

I want to be careful with that story. It’s a personal observation, not proof, and it doesn’t mean everyone will feel the same. But it made me stop and pay attention — and it’s a large part of what pushed me to explore the relationship between what we eat and how we think and feel.

Sleep: the brain’s nightly reset

Sitting right alongside food and blood sugar is a factor that may be the most underrated of all: sleep.

Sleep is when the brain resets and repairs. Skimp on it, even for a few nights, and the effects show up fast. Poor sleep makes emotional regulation harder, so small frustrations start to feel much bigger. It nudges up cortisol, one of the body’s main stress hormones. It disturbs the appetite hormones leptin and ghrelin — which is exactly why we reach for sugar and stodge when we’re tired. And it blunts concentration while increasing our perception of stress: the very same problem can feel manageable after a good night and overwhelming after a bad one.

None of that means something is wrong with you. It means a tired brain is running on low reserves.

The conversation between the gut and the brain

If nutrients are the ingredients, digestion is the kitchen — and the kitchen matters more than we tend to assume.

You can eat an excellent diet, but if digestion isn’t working well, you may not properly break down and absorb what you eat. In that case, the nutrients never fully reach the brain in the first place. Good food on the plate isn’t the same as good nourishment in the body.

But the gut does more than absorb. In recent years scientists have become fascinated by what’s often called the gut-brain axis — the constant, two-way communication between the digestive system and the brain. They’re linked directly by a major nerve, they exchange chemical signals, and the trillions of microbes living in the gut appear to take part in the conversation too. When your stomach “sinks” with bad news, or nerves send you running to the loo before a big event, you’re feeling this connection in action.

This has led to an evolving and still-developing area of research around the gut barrier itself. The lining of the intestine is meant to act as a careful gatekeeper — letting nutrients through while keeping unwanted substances out. Some researchers propose that when this barrier becomes more “permeable” than it should — an idea popularly called leaky gut — it may allow things to pass into the bloodstream that shouldn’t, potentially triggering inflammation that could, in turn, influence the brain.

It’s important to be measured here. This is a genuine area of scientific interest, but it’s still being worked out, and the details are far from settled. It’s best thought of as a promising line of enquiry rather than established fact.

When the body is inflamed, the brain feels it

That word — inflammation — deserves a closer look, because it may be one of the clearest bridges between body and mind.

Inflammation is the body’s normal response to injury or threat, and in the short term it’s protective. The problem is low-grade inflammation that quietly rumbles on in the background for months or years. The immune system communicates using chemical messengers, and those messengers don’t stay politely inside the body — they reach the brain too.

You already know what this feels like, even if you’ve never named it. Think of the last time you had flu: the low mood, the foggy thinking, the desire to withdraw and do nothing. That isn’t a coincidence. That’s inflammation influencing the brain. Researchers are increasingly interested in whether longer-term, low-level inflammation might contribute to some low mood and mental fatigue in a similar, quieter way.

Step back a few thousand years, because none of this is entirely new.

Traditional Chinese Medicine has long described close relationships between the body’s organ systems and particular emotional patterns. In this tradition, persistent frustration, ongoing worry and overthinking, deep-seated fear or lingering grief aren’t seen purely as problems of the mind. They’re understood as possible reflections of imbalance within the body’s systems — and, hopefully, as something that may ease as those systems become healthier and more balanced.

Here’s what I find remarkable. Modern nutritional science and Traditional Chinese Medicine use completely different language — one speaks of cytokines and cofactors, the other of organ systems and balance. On the surface they couldn’t sound more different. Yet they arrive at a strikingly similar instinct: don’t view the brain in isolation from the body.

What this means for fertility

I work closely with people who are trying to conceive, and this whole subject becomes very human very quickly.

Fertility can be a significant stressor in its own right — physiological and emotional at the same time. The waiting, the monitoring, the treatment cycles and the disappointments all take a genuine toll, and that toll isn’t felt only in the mind. Disrupted sleep, ongoing stress, heavier nutritional demands, blood sugar swings, inflammation and the delicate business of hormonal communication can all influence how a person feels emotionally along the way.

Almost everyone on that journey knows the weight of it: anxiety, frustration, fear, hope and disappointment arriving in waves. It’s completely understandable. But it’s worth gently questioning the automatic assumption that these emotions exist entirely on their own, sealed off from the body.

I say this to offer relief, not blame. This isn’t about suggesting your emotions are “all in the body” — any more than they’re all in the mind. The truth is that the brain and body are in constant conversation, each shaping the other. Feeling anxious or low does not mean you are broken, and it doesn’t mean the fault lies in your brain alone. Sometimes it means your brain is responding — sensibly — to a body that’s under strain and asking for support.

Supporting Your Brain Begins With Supporting Your Body

If the brain reflects the body it lives in, then supporting the mind often starts somewhere less obvious than the mind itself. None of the following is dramatic or complicated. Taken together, though, they help build an internal environment in which the brain can do its best work:

  • Eat nutrient-dense whole foods — real ingredients, close to how nature made them.
  • Prioritise quality protein, the raw material for your brain’s chemical messengers.
  • Include healthy natural fats, especially oily fish, for those all-important omega-3s.
  • Eat plenty of colourful vegetables for the vitamins, minerals and fibre your body and gut rely on.
  • Support your gut health, since that’s where much of your nourishment is actually absorbed.
  • Keep blood sugar relatively stable by building balanced meals rather than relying on quick hits.
  • Sleep consistently, protecting the hours when your brain resets and repairs.
  • Move your body regularly, in whatever way you enjoy enough to keep doing.
  • Manage chronic stress before it becomes the background hum of daily life.
  • Spend time outdoors, which quietly supports mood, sleep and stress.
  • Maintain meaningful social connections — one of the most powerful influences on wellbeing there is.
  • Seek appropriate medical care whenever you need it, without hesitation.

Let me be clear about what this list is and isn’t. None of these guarantee perfect mental health, and none is a cure for mental illness. Mental health is shaped by many factors — genetic, psychological, social and circumstantial — and lifestyle is only ever part of the picture. But together, these habits create an internal environment that gives the brain the best possible chance to function well. That’s worth having, whatever else is going on.

A different question to ask

None of this replaces good medical or mental health care. But alongside that support, it may be worth widening the lens. The brain is not a sealed room. It’s a living organ, deeply dependent on nutrients, on steady fuel, on good sleep, on healthy digestion, on a calm rather than inflamed internal environment — nourished by the whole body around it.

So perhaps the question isn’t simply, “What’s wrong with my brain?” — or even “What’s wrong with me?”

This is what the Restoration Model encourages: to widen the question rather than narrow it. Before assuming something is broken, it invites a gentler and often more useful set of questions. What resources might my body be missing? What systems might need supporting? And, quite simply, what is my brain responding to?

Sometimes the first step towards a healthier mind is not to begin with the mind at all.

Sometimes it is to begin by restoring the body that supports it.
